As 2009 comes to the conclusion, most people would be reviewing their achievements or lack of it. Certainly this year has been an eventful year in most respect and looks like 2010 would be very much the same.
Politically, 2009 saw interesting events such as the change of government in Perak, political branding by both sides of the political divide and the near defeat of the budget resolution in the Parliament. For those who still wish for the so called "political stability", I would imagine that they would be wishing for something that would never come. The political landscape has changed and competition, good policies and performance are the orders of the day. As the Rakyat becomes more educated and politically matured, politicians could no longer assume that they would be getting the votes by promising development but misbehaving at the same time.

Economically, the later part of 2009 provides us with the hope that 2010 would be Malaysia back on the growth path. The promised "New Economic Model" would be make public in the first quarter of 2010. It would be interesting to watch how "New" the concept would be and how far that is followed through. This country has a lot of plans and strategies but follow up and implementation is not something that we could be proud of.
Would the society change in 2010? This is a very interesting question. As Einstein had said in the past "Insanity is expecting the same result by doing things the same thing over and over again". If we want our lives to change and improve, we have no choice but to change our behaviours and attitude. For example how much are we willing to change in order to have better and sustainable living? Are we continue to support leaders who are corrupted as long as the could bring something that we call development? Would we be willing to let the future of our young generations to be determined by those who are not competent?
While 2009 saw the continued change in technology, 2010 would definitely offer more of that. One company that keeps on offering something for the world is Apple. We saw the introduction of iphone 3GS this year and the rumours suggest something special from Apple will be announced in January 2010. Collaboration and network-centric innovation seem to be the trend and will continue in the future. Malaysians need to break away of "all Malaysian content" and should start to join the global network to imagine, create and innovate.

Environmental issues would certainly be more discussed in Malaysia. Hopefully the allocation in the 2010 budget would be rolled out efficiently with no corrupt practices as the road block. Corruption is one of the key factors which result in the degradation of the environment that we live in as rules are compromised and enforcement selectively performed. We cannot assume that the air, water and other natural resources will continue to be available at the cheap price. I would certainly like to see Muslims to be more conservative while taking their ablution. If in the performance of prayers they don't care about water conservation, how do we expect them to behave in other situations?
As usual a new year will bring hope and anxiety but the outcome would certainly be based on persistent efforts and the ability to respond to the changing circumstances. Blaming others is easy for our lack of success but the tough past is to admit our own weaknesses and move forward in a positive different manner.
Happy New Year 2010!
